There's truly not much goin on in Chicama besides surfing so we decided to go to a local school and give them our pens and pencils we brought from the states. A lot of times in traveling, little kids will ask for pens and pencils and we never had any with us. I wasn't going to be ill-equipped this time around so I brought a ton down. We asked around and someone told us about a school who was always hurting for money.
We paid a little visit and met some of the cutest kids. It looked like there were only a few kids for each grade and only one teacher for both classrooms. We also brought our stash of pop rocks. They seemed pretty happy to see us and we had a good time handing out school supplies and showing them how pop rocks work. They couldn't stop giggling at their desks. How can you not be a traveler when you get to have moments like this?
Also lets talk about tuk tuks. Who invented them? How do you make one? Why do so many countries have them and we don't? They are seriously the coolest and if I could tote my future niños around in one...I would.
After realizing there wasn't much going on in this town, we decided to make it our mission to drive one of these things.
First up, we had to find a driver crazy enough to let us get behind the wheel. So. We somehow tracked down a tuk tuk man (or mototaxi man, as they say out here) and we became friends with him. We convinced him with a little money and poor spanish that we would be GREAT drivers. He finally decided to show us the ropes.
I'll be honest, they are way more stressful than they look. You've got to be pretty strong to steer, the brakes barely work, oh and they tip over. We obviously couldn't stop laughing cause they are just so funny. But for the record I have a whole new level of respect for the hustlers that drive those things.
